Question 1.
(a) Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the redworms?
Answer : Redworms are a type of earthworm that helps in preparing compost from the kitchen wastes and parts of plants or animals. They are nature’s ultimate composting worms and used majorly in vermicomposting. The garbage which contains pieces of aluminium wrappers, broken glass, polythene bags, nails, broken toys, old shoes, cloths cannot be converted into compost by red worms.
(b) Have you seen any other organism besides redworms, in your pit? If yes, try
to find out their names. Draw pictures of these.
Answer : Yes. Generally might contain other soil microbes such as bacteria, spiders, small bugs, flies, moulds and small insects other species of earthworms such as brandling worm and red wiggler worm They all or may be some microbes also in the pit which help in decaying of garbage.

(a) Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?
Answer : I think Not only govertment but every citizen has a responsibility of Proper disposal of garbage. In INDIA everyday A lot of waste is generated from homes, schools, offices hospitals, etc. This garbage includes different types waste materials like food waste, paper, plastic, glass, metal, etc. Therefore, it is essential that every individual of india must reduce the production of wastes and must help in the proper disposal of these waste material or garbage.
Here are some steps by which we can reduce the problem of garbage disposal.
- Avoid using plastic bags and use paper bags or always carry a cloth or jute bag while shopping
- Save paper.
- Use separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable or recyclable and non-recyclable waste
- Kitchen waste that includes fruit and vegetable peels, waste food, tea leaves, etc. can be used to make manure.
- Encourage your family, friends, and others to follow proper disposal of waste material.
- social awareness about harmfull effects of the garbage.
(b) Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage?
Answer : Yes, It is possible Here are some steps by which we can reduce the problem of garbage disposal.

Question 3. (a) What do you do with the left over food at home?
Answer :
(a) Make Compost : Left over food can be collected and used to make compost. Compost provides nutrients essential for the growth and development of plants.
Help Anothers : left over food can be used to feed our pets, may be street dogs , for birds,for other animals we should never waste that as it can help to fill the empty space or hungerness of any other animal.
Make another dish : Leftover food is not a waste. It can be used to make new dishes. otherwise it can be given to feed the stray animals.
(b) If you and your friends are given the choice of eating in a plastic plate or a
banana leaf platter at a party, which one would you prefer and why?
Answer : We will select banana leaf platter because it can be easily converted into manure by composting. Plastic plate can be recycled but in this process it gives out harmful gases which pollute the environment. Plastic items cannot be converted into manure by composting.
Question 4. (a) Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.
Answer : Pieces of papers collected from newspaper, notebooks, magazines, etc. can be easily recycled. Plastic coated and shiny papers cannot be recycled easily. Most paper is recyclable. The exceptions are papers that have been waxed or contaminated with food; toilet tissue; cigarette papers; wallpaper; and of course, archival records. coated and treated paper, paper with food waste, juice and cereal boxes, paper cups, paper towels, and paper or magazine laminated with plastic.
(b) With the help of a lens look at the pieces of paper you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper ?
Answer : Paper is made from the Wood pulp. Cotton and other some fibres are also used to the manufacturing of paper. Now a day’s most of the paper is manufactured from wood pulp only. Some wood pulp consists of vegetable fibres called cellulose
- All kind of paper consists of wood pulp, therefore, all are recycled.
- There is no difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper.
- The only diffrence is the recycled paper has low quality
Question 5. (a)Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss in groups.
Answer : We collected Different kinds of packaging materials that are used for different purposes. Sometimes, the value of the packed material is also a deciding factor in selecting a particular packaging material. A packaging material serves many purposes. It helps in increasing the shelf life of the product, and makes it easier to transport the product. Moreover, the packaging material also enhances the appeal of a product.
(b) Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced?
Answer : In many cases, lot of packaging material is used like Packaging of food-items, gift packs, chocolates, toys, clothes, shoes, than what is required. Some dresses come packed in plastic cases which are moulded according to the shape of the packed material. By reusing the packaging material, we can reduce the accumulation of garbage.
(c) Write a story on how packaging increases the amount of garbage.
Answer : The basic purpose of packaging is to protect the product from tampering and to maintain its freshness and purity. most of time it is unnecessary.
Unnecessary packaging is a serious issue that increases the amount of garbage at home, city and in country. When we open a package, we use the things packed inside it while the packaging material is of no use and we throw it. Sometimes, people throw the packaging material on streets and roads which becomes difficult to dispose off. This causes environmental pollution as well. Sometimes, these packaging materials go down the drains and block the flow of water. This causes the problems arising due to stagnant water. Thus, packaging definitely increases the amount of garbage can cause difficulty in its proper disposal.
6. Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilisers? Why?
Answer : Yes, it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilizers for the following reasons:
- We can easily prepare compost at our home.
- Compost is ecofriendly as it does not cause any harm to environment and health issues in humans being and animals.
- Compost are Enriches soil, helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests.
- Compost Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
- Compost Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to create humus, a rich nutrient-filled material.
- Compost will not cause any type of pollution
- Compost increases soil fertility which help to farmers.
- Compost is biodegradable, we can easily degrade the compost.
