b) When can an object be seen?
Answer : An object can be seen if it causes light, or prevents light, from striking the eye of a conscious being, capable of detecting that wavelength of light.

c) What is a shadow?
Answer : The shadow of an object is formed only when light does not pass through the object.

  1. The kind of shadow it forms depends upon the relative distances between the source of light, the object and the surface or the screen on which the shadow is formed.
  2. The shadow of an object formed due to sunlight is long in the mornings and evenings and short in the afternoon.
  3. We can easily note these changes if we observe the trees along the roadside. This change in the shadow depends on the source of light, the object and also on the surface on which the shadow is formed.

Can you Tell :
1. Can we see anything in total darkness?
Answer : First of all, it is impossible to see anything at all in total darkness. Total darkness means the absence of light, and our eyes depend on light to see. With that said, it is quite rare to be in a situation with total darkness, even at night.

2. What helps us to see the objects around us?
Answer : We can see an object because light from an object can move through space and reach our eyes. Once light reaches our eyes, signals are sent to our brain and brain deciphers the information in order to detect the appearance, location and movement of the objects we are seeing.

3. What does the light in each one of the pictures originate from?
Answer : An image is formed because light emanates from an object in a variety of directions. Some of this light (which we represent by rays) reaches the mirror and reflects off the mirror according to the law of reflection.
