Introduction to HSC
The full form of HSC is Higher Secondary Certificate, which is also known as Higher Secondary Certificate in Hindi. If said in simple language, only 10 + 2 is called Higher Secondary. History of HSC
Since the year 1989, all the states of India have been converted into 12-year (standard) primary / secondary cycle. After two years of Senior Secondary School, students are re-examined by their school’s affiliated board and, upon successful, are awarded the Higher Secondary (School) Certificate (HSC / HSSC). There are also exams administered internally by individual secondary schools at the end of the eleventh grade.

There are a total of 47 state examination boards and three national boards. The syllabus for Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (HSC) is also prescribed by these 47 state boards and 3 national boards.
Students who pass HSC are eligible for university entrance, although some selected colleges or universities require separate entrance examinations. A score of at least 80% in the HSC from state boards of education may meet the entry requirements, provided an appropriate standard of English has been attained.

Students with high scores (75%) from the CBSE and CISCE boards can meet the entry requirements, provided an appropriate standard of English has been achieved. Admission to professional programs (engineering, architecture, medicine, etc.) is through competitive state- or national-level entrance examinations. These include Joint Entrance Examination (Indian Institute of Technology), All India Pre-Medical / Pre-Dental Examination and All India Engineering Entrance Examination. Some universities in India are converting their three-year programs to four-year degrees (mimicking the US model), which may lead to adjustment of admission criteria, e.g. Delhi University.
