What are the constituents of biogas? Enlist advantages and disadvantages of biogas.
Answer : Biogas consists of 50-70%% methane, 30-40 % CO, and small amount of H,S, H, and N.
Advantages of Biogas :
- Biogas is renewable source of energy.
- Biogas is a storable energy source
- Raw material is easily available.
- It is odourless, smokeless, and pollution free.
- It is useful as an efficient fuel.
- Residue (sludge) is used as fertilizer.
- It is non poisonous.
- The gas can be used not only for cooking but also for lighting purpose , for power generation to run small water pumps and flour mills.
- Fertilizer is without pathogens and thus improves sanitation.
- lt proves cheap fuel in rural areas
Disadvantages of Biogas :
- Biogas gas production requires optimum temperature 38°C which may not be in winter season.
- It requires pH of about 6.8 which may get change at some time.
- It requires advance planning about 15 to 30 days.
- Use of gobar gas becomes inconvenient in urban areas.
- Daily addition of slurry is required.
- Periodical removal of sludge is essential.
